JPN Paradox 08 | Hidden Effort Behind Order and Harmony
Things are not always what they seem.

If you’ve visited Japan, you notice it almost instantly.
People are polite. Trains are on time. Streets are clean.
If you live here, you appreciate it, too.
That sense of consistency, reliability, and order is invaluable.
I’ve often heard people describe Japan as calm or even “zen.”
But what we often don’t see is the hidden effort that sustains this sense of order and harmony.
Beneath the smiles, the punctuality, and the spotless streets,
there is an extraordinary amount of effort being carried by people every day.
Holding back a personal opinion to preserve harmony.
Anticipating others’ needs before they are spoken.
Following rules, even when they feel inconvenient.
Taking responsibility, even when no one is watching.
Together, they create the Japan that so many of us admire.
Years ago, Japan Post stopped delivering regular mail on Saturdays.
I gladly supported the decision, especially given the reality of labor shortages.
In a way, I was relieved, even.
It’s okay, I can wait for my letter to arrive until Monday.
There’s an English expression that I often think about. Calm like a duck.
Above the surface, everything looks fine.
Below, the legs are moving constantly.
In Japan, there’s a similar sentiment.
Smiling on the outside, while crying on the inside.
For those who admire these qualities from the outside,
it’s worth remembering what it takes to sustain them.
And for those living within it,
it’s okay if things are not always perfect.
There is no need to carry everything alone.
Or to always place others before yourself.
This makes me wonder: How do we create a balance between showing up for others, and taking care of ourselves? What has been your experience?
***JPN Paradox series is not an indictment of Japan. It’s an invitation to explore perspectives, to reflect on what may seem paradoxical across different cultural and social contexts. By making these tensions visible, we hope to spark dialogue and deepen understanding. We’d love to hear your perspective.***
